All growth begins with awareness. Awareness is dependent on self-observation and reflection.
The study of the Enneagram can be interesting but limited if you see it simply as a model that reduces people to a number – you are ‘more than a number’.
Martin offers a series of workshops based on his book, More than a number.
Participating in these workshops you will be encouraged to notice and reflect on why you think, feel and behave as you do. You will be challenged to accept that others see reality differently from you, so they are not necessarily wrong, difficult, or obtuse, just different.
The benefits of exploring yourself through the Enneagram are many, including gaining a greater understanding of yourself and others, having better personal and professional relationships, being more real at work and at home, making more balanced decisions and managing stress and conflict more effectively.
Through this awareness, you can gain more flexibility in the way you respond to people and situations. Using the Enneagram as a framework, you too can recognise and tell your own story; you will put your own words, experience and understanding onto the model – you are the expert in your own type patterns. Consequently, you will develop your own individual growth path and action plans.
You will begin the journey of rediscovering your true self; your superpowers.
The Enneagram is an extremely effective tool to use in organisations. It complements existing policies by promoting Diversity, Dignity and Inclusion. Its application is easily tailored for a variety of situations and can be adapted to fit the needs of specific individuals or groups.
Knowing why people follow you, how you come across or how you influence others you engage with is very useful feedback in understanding how you impact those around you at work. How you communicate and influence others at work reflects your type patterns. The Enneagram model is an excellent self-management tool and very effective for helping you understand your leadership style. Knowing your Enneagram strengths and challenges gives you information about what changes you need to make in order to be more effective at managing yourself at work.
I am regularly asked by those in a leadership position, “How do I get the best out of my staff?” My stock answer is “Get the best out of yourself first.”

1. Which of these statements resonates with you?
2. Which of these statements would you never consider?
Clients are introduced to the key concepts and a review of the nine type patterns. Martin’s emphasis is on accountability and responsibility, with the aim of continuous evolution and personal growth.
The client accepts their view of the world and works on further awareness by identifying their Emotional Drive and Thinking Style. These are the important elements that confirm the type patterns and lay the foundation for later work.
We explore the ‘wings’, the ‘arrows’ and the ‘inner triangle’ structure. Martin encourages clients to reflect on what they discovered about themselves from the exercise as their homework between sessions.
Here, the focus shifts to working actively with the arrows and wings, and balancing the three centres: decision-making, the shadow and bodywork. Building up resources for catching the subtleties of patterns as they arise is important learning for the client at this stage. It may be useful to introduce attention practices at this stage.
This stage aims to set the groundwork for sustained change and growth. One common result is more pragmatic goal setting and resulting action points. It may be appropriate to address specific applications at this stage, such as communication, stress, conflict, or leadership style, depending on the issues facing the client.
Goal setting and action planning are useful activities to support practical changes at each stage. The ultimate goal, however, is not to achieve a specific target but to create sustainable personal awareness on the part of the client. More tangible goals may also be made based on the new insights from the self-discovery work.
